We are a non-profit organization   that is committed to honoring our   veterans and those who lost their   lives on 9/11/2001. We also like   hiking.

9/11 Memorial Mt. Grant Challenge

We challenge you to climb the highest peak in Mineral County, Nevada, as a tribute to those who lost their lives on 9/11.  This is a rare opportunity to climb 17 miles of some of the most pristine lands in the region and ascend 7000 feet to the summit of Mt. Grant.  When you reach the peak you will receive finisher's award, recognition on the website and a breathtaking view at 11,239 feet. The location for the 9/11 Challenge is situated in the high desert of Nevada and near the community of Hawthorne; known as "America's Patriotic Home." Proceeds from this event will benefit the VFW Veteran's Park.

911 Memorial Mt. Grant History
Our Generation will always remember the tragedy of 9/11/2001(911).
This attack on the United State changed the security rules within the Department of Defense Installation/Facilities. What was once land that was accessible to the public is now under tighter secure rules that may differ from installation to installation.
Mt. Grant is located on the Hawthorne Army Depot property and has been one of those lands that was easily accessed by the public and has fallen under increased security rules. It has been assumed by many that Mt. Grant was restricted from the public. Although this was the assumption, the mountain was under tighter rules and access needed to be permitted by the Army Depot Security. The Army Depot Command (including the Operating Contractor) for years were trying to get the word out to the community that Mt. Grant was open, but under enhanced security and that access could be obtained through The Depot Security Office.
On the tenth anniversary of 911, several folks in the community of Hawthorne working with the Depot Command group had an idea that a coordinate hike from the town of Walker to the top of Mt. Grant would be one way of getting the word out to the community that Mt. Grant could be accessed. A small group of folks working with the Hawthorne Army Depot Command group agreed to put together the hike on or around September 11th in honor of the people and events of 911. The first event took place on Sept 11th 2011. The event was well organized and very successful. The group had agreed to try again to organize the event again the following year. That small group of folks became the 911 Memorial Mt. Grant Committee (911MMGC).
The 911MMGC has grown into an non-profit organization and has been successful every year with over 25 sponsor/partners entertaining over a hundred participants, attacking hikers from as far away as Italy.

What Participants Are Saying

"Very well organized event - took about 5:45 to go from start to the top. Plenty of refreshments offered by volunteers throughout the hike, could have left my pack at home. Good time, great views, highly recommended if you haven't done it. Trip report is HERE."
